A: It has a foam-like material that sets against the tank and the magnets are protected. I think there is more danger in scratching the tank by the zipper on my jacket than my tank bag. But clean the area where the magnets will come in contact with the tank, any dirt, rocks, etc. will scratch the finish - not the magnets.
